연구실 소개
담당교수 : 박병배
조림학(silviculture)은 산림의 지속가능한 이용과 관리를 목적으로 숲을 조성하고, 가꾸고, 이용하기 위해 필요한 과학과 기술이다. 따라서 조림학은 생태(ecology), 사회(society), 경제(economics)와 밀접한 관련을 맺으며 상호작용함으로써 산림의 경제적·공익적 가치를 창출·보전시킬 수 있다.
산림에서 얻을 수 있는 다양한 편익은 생태적, 경제적, 사회적 가치로 구분할 수 있다. 산림은 광합성과 증산작용 그리고 물질순환을 통해 대기-수목-토양 사이에 탄소, 질소, 물 등을 순환시키는 고유한 생태계이며, 식물과 야생동물의 서식처를 제공하여 생물다양성 보전에 큰 역할을 한다. 산림생태계는 지구온난화 저감, 대기 정화 및 재해 예방 등 다양한 사회적 가치를 제공한다. 또한 산림에서 생산되는 목재 및 다양한 청정임산물의 가치도 간과할 수 없다.
조림학은 산림의 다양한 형태에 따른 생태계의 구조, 기능, 역할에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 산림 조성부터 이용까지 임학 전반에 대해 연구함으로써 궁극적으로 산림의 지속가능한 이용과 관리를 달성시킴과 동시에 국민의 행복을 극대화시키는 것을 목표로 한다.
조림생태학연구실은 산림에 대해 갈수록 다양해지는 국민의 요구에 대응하고, 산림이 지속가능한 생태계서비스를 제공할 수 있도록 다양한 산림관리기술을 연구하고 있다. 주요 연구 분야로는 ‘기후변화에 따른 산림생태계서비스 변화 이해’, ‘우리나라에 적합한 친환경적 조림 및 숲가꾸기 기술 개발’, ‘산림 탄소량과 숲가꾸기의 관계’, ‘도시숲 조성에 적합한 중형수목 생산 산업화 방안’, ‘스마트기술을 활용한 새로운 산림관리 기술 개발’ 등이 있다.
